The area sits on the traditional lands of the Tongva and Chumash peoples. The Tongva village of Ceegenga may have been the closest settlement to Granada Hills. In 1916, the first oil well in the San Fernando Valley was drilled at the northern tip of Zelzah Avenue. The community was founded in 1926 as "Granada" and renamed Granada Hills in 1941.
